Behind the scenes of Mathilde Toft’s latest single – a raw, honest anthem for self-worth and healing.
We all carry someone with us. A younger version. A quieter voice. A forgotten dream. “Inner Child” is my tribute to her – the little girl who needed someone to say: you are enough.
This song came from a place of deep reflection, vulnerability and, honestly, a bit of healing. In this post, I’d love to take you behind the scenes of how it came to life – from the first line to the final vocal take.
Writing “Inner Child”
The idea for Inner Child came during a late-night journaling session. I had written the words:
“You’ve always been strong, even when you were scared.”
That line didn’t end up in the song, but it cracked something open.
I thought about how often we dismiss our childhood experiences or silence our younger selves. I wanted to write a song that did the opposite – one that acknowledged her, honoured her, and ultimately, freed her.
It started as a poem. Then a melody came. Within a few days, the chorus had taken shape:
“Hey little girl, you’re enough, you’re enough No more shadows hide your light, it’s tough…”
Recording the Song
When I recorded Inner Child one thing was clear from the start: This song needed space.
I kept the production minimal – soft piano, gentle strings, and layered vocals to create a sense of intimacy. The power of the song is in its message, not in how loud it is.
When I recorded the final chorus, I cried. Not because it was sad – but because it felt like coming home to something I didn’t know I was missing.
For You – and the Girl in the Mirror
If this song resonates with you, I want you to know: you’re not alone. We all have an “inner child” who deserves to be seen, heard, and loved.
Let this be your reminder. Or your permission. Or your anthem.
